Happy Halloween a tad early! This is also my submission for Penelope Dullaghan's Monster Mash contest. My inspiration was a real-life Dr. Payne, though he is male and a philosophy professor and not named Frida. Also, he didn't have horns. My dentist growing up was actually named Dr. Crowley, which isn't a whole lot better. But anyway, monsters have pretty impressive teeth usually, so you've got to wonder who their dentist is.

Illustration Friday: GROW
How kind of Illustration Friday to give me an extension on last week's assignment! My sketch for last week's "extremes" fit just as well for "grow," so here's the finished piece.Unfortunately, my scanner's having blurring problems. This is bad news for all pictures, but especially for pastel work, which really relies on texture. Also, having to scan my work is preventing me from working larger, which I'm starting to think I really need to do in order to get the level of detail I want. I know many of you must work large and still post online-- do you all have large scanners, or do you know tricks for getting good digital photos of your work? Help!
In any case, here's the bit of the piece that didn't blur...

Illustration Friday: EXTREMES

All I've got is a sketch for you this week, folks. I've been incredibly busy, both at my day job and other art-related projects, including...
MY NEW WEBSITE!
Check it out and let me know what you think! As for my take on "extremes" starring the city girl and the country girl... I like it enough to someday, when things slow down a bit, make an honest, finished piece of art out of it. (Also, I apologize for lying on Illustration Friday. Clearly, this is not done in pastel. I guess it's just habit to select that particular medium. Forgive me?)

Illustration Friday: OPEN

I had the frame of this picture planned for a long time, but went back and forth about what should be outside the door-- should it be something fantastical, like a monster or a castle in the air? Or should it just be the great outdoors? So I compromised and created this stylish version of a mystical fall day. And since the leaves won't be changing color in southern Ohio this year, this is a bit of a fantasty world our heroine is stepping out into, if she lives near me. May those of you in other parts of the country and world enjoy your autumn colors! Just open the door...
